A quantum computer capable of breaking Ethereum’s cryptography does not exist yet. But should we really wait for its arrival to prepare? For Vitalik Buterin, the answer is clearly no. Post-quantum security now occupies a central place in the network’s projects. Alongside it are privacy and artificial intelligence. However, there is no question of entrusting the blockchain’s controls to an AI. The goal is much more concrete: to help developers verify that the protocol does what it is supposed to do.

Ethereum already treats quantum risk as a priority

Vitalik Buterin compared his 2023 roadmap to Ethereum’s new “Strawmap.” Several objectives that were secondary or even absent three years ago now take center stage. Unsurprisingly, quantum resistance is among them. This shift extends the post-quantum transition already underway by Ethereum

Indeed, cryptographic signatures that currently protect accounts and some network functions could become vulnerable if sufficiently powerful quantum computers appear. No one knows exactly when this technological break will happen. Ethereum therefore prefers to prepare the migration before urgency. The Ethereum Foundation has already created a team dedicated to post-quantum security.

Developers are also working on consensus, accounts, data availability, and cryptographic proofs. STARKs hold an important place in this architecture. Why? Because they allow verification of calculations without relying on certain cryptographic mechanisms vulnerable to quantum attacks. This anticipation contrasts with a common habit in crypto: fixing after the crisis. Here, Ethereum tries to change the foundations before the attack becomes realistic.

Artificial intelligence enters Ethereum security

The most unexpected part of the new roadmap concerns AI. Buterin believes that recent advances now allow a broader use of formal verification. This method aims to mathematically prove that a program meets the expected properties.

The Ethereum protocol becomes more complex as scalability, privacy, and proof mechanisms evolve. Manually rechecking every detail is no longer enough. Artificial intelligence can assist developers in analyzing specifications, finding errors, and producing more rigorous verifications.

However, Buterin sets a clear limit. AI does not replace proof. It helps to build it. This is an important nuance for an infrastructure that moves billions of dollars. The network cannot accept a conclusion just because a model says it is correct.

This logic was already visible in Ethereum’s crypto roadmap around Glamsterdam. AI appeared there as a tool serving security, privacy, and audit, rather than as an autonomous layer making decisions instead of the protocol.

Ethereum is therefore looking for a very specific use of artificial intelligence. Not a chatbot grafted onto the blockchain. Not a marketing argument. A tool capable of making an architecture verifiable that has become too complex to depend solely on the human eye.

ETH wants to scale without sacrificing its foundations

Quantum computing and AI are not the only changes. The new Strawmap also strengthens privacy, simplifies some specifications, and explores more specialized scalability mechanisms. The idea is to no longer indiscriminately seek to increase the capacity of all Ethereum. Some infrastructures would be optimized for the heaviest uses, like token transfers, swaps, or future privacy protocols.

This strategy could also lead Ethereum beyond certain historic components of its architecture. The roadmap notably mentions native rollups and considers a future where the EVM would no longer necessarily be the sole technical gravity center of the network.

The bet is ambitious. The more Ethereum prepares for quantum computing, adds cryptographic proofs, and automates verification of its code, the more its architecture risks becoming difficult to understand. The desire for simplification thus becomes almost as important as the new technologies themselves.

This is where the convergence between crypto and artificial intelligence takes on concrete meaning. As Vitalik Buterin had already outlined when reflecting on Ethereum’s future in the face of AI’s rise, the goal is not to add AI everywhere. It is to use it when the machine can make the system more verifiable without removing control from users. Ethereum’s post-quantum era is therefore being prepared now, well before the first real shock arrives.
