Key Takeaways

  • Westwater Resources (WWR) shares jumped 87.7% following news of a $25M Export-Import Bank financing package
  • The financing will support WWR’s Alabama-based graphite mining operation, poised to become America’s inaugural natural graphite supplier
  • 5E Advanced Materials (FEAM) secured an $8M Ex-Im loan for expanding boron manufacturing capacity
  • Global Advanced Metals, a privately-held firm, obtained $25M in financing to scale up tantalum and niobium processing in Pennsylvania
  • The combined $58M financing package aligns with the Trump administration’s initiative to decrease dependence on Chinese critical mineral imports

Shares of Westwater Resources (WWR) rocketed 87.7% during Friday’s trading session, with the bulk of gains materializing in the final trading hour following a Reuters exclusive revealing the company secured a $25 million financing commitment from the U.S. Export-Import Bank.

The financing package will support the development of WWR’s graphite extraction and processing operations in Alabama. Once operational, the facility will represent the nation’s inaugural domestic source of natural graphite.

Graphite represents the highest-volume metal component in lithium-ion battery production. Currently, American production is limited exclusively to synthetic graphite, which is manufactured from petroleum coke—a derivative of the oil refining process.

Battery producers generally select between natural and synthetic graphite based on specific performance requirements, making a homegrown natural graphite source a significant strategic asset.

5E Advanced Materials (FEAM) also featured in the Reuters disclosure. This company will benefit from an $8 million Ex-Im financing arrangement to scale up boron output at its California-based operations.

Boron received designation as a critical mineral by U.S. authorities in the previous year. The element plays a vital role in nuclear power generation, protective armor systems, and various military applications. Commercial operations at the California site are projected to commence in 2028.

The United States presently relies on foreign sources for the majority of its boron requirements.

Global Advanced Metals Receives Funding Package

The third beneficiary is Global Advanced Metals, a non-public entity, which obtained $25 million in financing to enhance its tantalum and niobium processing capabilities. Domestic mining of these minerals does not currently exist within U.S. borders.

Global Advanced Metals extracts both materials from Australian mining operations and conducts processing activities at its Pennsylvania-based facility.

Tantalum serves as a critical component in capacitor manufacturing for mobile devices and automotive applications. Niobium functions as a strengthening alloy in steel production for pipeline infrastructure and aerospace manufacturing.

The aggregate financing commitment totals $58 million distributed among the three recipients.

White House Convenes Mining Industry Leaders

The timing of the funding disclosure was coordinated with a Friday White House gathering between President Trump and senior leadership from several of the planet’s most prominent mining corporations.

The gathering focused on advancing U.S. objectives for more resilient domestic and partner-nation mineral procurement networks.

ExIm chairman John Jovanovic stated the financing seeks to “fortify our supply chains, restore crucial industries that support well-paying American jobs and safeguard everyday Americans from supply shocks.”

WWR’s dramatic price movement occurred predominantly during the final trading hour, indicating the Reuters disclosure emerged late in the market session.

FEAM did not experience a comparable price reaction to WWR in response to the announcement
