X, the social media platform owned by Elon Musk, has introduced a new feature enabling US users to initiate trades directly from financial conversations on its timeline. Tapping on supported cashtags, such as $BTC or $TSLA, now reveals live price charts, related posts, and a prominent “Trade” button. This button redirects users to a selection of partnered brokerages.

Cashtag Partner Program and Launch Partners

The Cashtag Partner Program went live with five initial partners: Interactive Brokers, Moomoo, Gemini, Kraken, and Coinbase. These companies represent a mix of major equities and cryptocurrency trading platforms, expanding the scope of assets users can interact with on X.

After selecting the “Trade” option, users are sent to the partner’s mobile app or website, where they can log in or register an account to execute their order. X itself does not directly process transactions, handle settlements, or provide custody services for these trades.

“Cashtags close the gap between a ticker on the timeline and the market itself,” stated Mridul Singhai, X’s product engineering lead.

By focusing on user routing rather than direct brokerage services, X avoids the regulatory responsibilities of operating as a broker-dealer. This strategy enables X to capture trading interest as it arises within financial and crypto discussions, while the participating exchanges benefit from immediate exposure to users at the moment of decision.

Coverage and Supported Assets

Coverage varies across the program’s launch partners. Gemini, a New York-based cryptocurrency exchange, reported support for both stocks and five specific digital assets: ZEC, HYPE, BTC, ETH, and SOL. Kraken, another leading crypto platform, allows US users to access trading for any supported crypto cashtag through its referral system. On the equities side, Interactive Brokers and Moomoo facilitate access to a wide range of traditional stocks. X has not released a comprehensive list of all supported tickers.

Mini dictionary: Moomoo is a US-based retail trading platform offering commission-free access to stocks, ETFs, and options. Users can trade US and international equities and access real-time data through its mobile and desktop applications.

Building on Earlier Efforts

X’s new trading integration builds on several previous initiatives. In April, the platform enhanced cashtags to include interactive pages with live charts and real-time price data. At the time, Nikita Bier, then-head of product, stated the roadmap included eventually adding direct trading links for users.

The move aligns with a broader strategy from Musk to expand the platform’s financial ecosystem. Since acquiring X, he has pushed for initiatives such as obtaining money transmitter licenses in multiple US states and advancing the X Money payments system. The latest step also closely parallels a previous partnership between Twitter and eToro, launched in April 2023, which allowed users to access external trading platforms through cashtags.

By routing users to external partners instead of managing trades internally, X provides a direct handoff at the critical point when trading intentions are formed during active financial conversations.

X has yet to release details on broader plans for asset coverage or additional partners but signaled ongoing development in its financial services infrastructure.
