Nikita Bier has stepped down as Head of Product at X, Elon Musk's social media platform, after a little more than a year in the role. He announced the move himself on the platform, framing his departure not as a resignation but as a step back from daily leadership. He will continue with X in an advisory capacity.
Nearly 30 Products in About 400 Days
Bier joined X as head of product in July 2025, arriving with a reputation built on founding viral social apps tbh and Gas, which were acquired by Meta and Discord respectively. During his tenure, he oversaw record user growth, a 70-spot rise in App Store rankings, major rebuilds to features like the timeline and notifications, and nearly 30 new products, including bot defenses and profile labels.
One of the more notable transparency features he championed was "about this account," which showed accounts' countries of origin and exposed a number of popular accounts that had masqueraded as US-based political influencers. Bier also rolled out tighter creator revenue-sharing rules aimed at curbing undisclosed AI content and clickbait.
Passing the Torch
In his announcement post, Bier described the role as demanding. "Running this app is a 24/7 job and it's now time for me to take a breather," he wrote. He named three people he expects to carry the product function forward: Benji Taylor on design, Singhal on core product engineering, and Dinkin Flicka on mobile engineering.
Bier praised the team and received thanks from Elon Musk for making X better, amid continued strong engagement. His tenure was not without turbulence. On at least one occasion, Musk weighed in and shelved a Bier-announced plan hours after it was made public.
Bier closed his post with a sign-off to the X team, writing: "See you on the Timeline."
