In Brief:

  • Cyber Capital founder Justin Bons publicly accused XRP supporters of misleading retail investors and questioned the network’s decentralization and governance structure.
  • XRP Ledger developers withheld security-sensitive source code from version 3.4.1, while the fixBatchV1_2 amendment could affect outdated network servers significantly.
  • Bons criticized XRP Ledger’s recommended validator lists, arguing that their publishers hold considerable influence over validator selection and network governance.

Cyber Capital founder Justin Bons has accused XRP supporters of misleading retail investors about decentralization, raising concerns over network governance and software transparency.

According to Bons, promoting XRP as decentralized amounts to fraud, particularly when developers withhold security-sensitive source code from public inspection. The criticism also targets XRP Ledger’s validator selection system, which Bons argues gives certain organizations excessive influence over network operations.

XRP Ledger Security Update Raises Transparency Concerns

XRP Ledger developers released server software version 3.4.1 on September 25, addressing security vulnerabilities and introducing the fixBatchV1_2 amendment. Developers confirmed that certain security fixes remain unpublished, with plans to release their source code alongside a technical retrospective.

Bons criticized the decision, arguing that undisclosed software changes create unnecessary security concerns for network participants and investors. The amendment could activate on October 9 if validators provide sufficient support under the network’s established voting requirements.

Once activated, the amendment will prevent servers running incompatible software from maintaining synchronization with the XRP Ledger network. Consequently, affected node operators must upgrade their software to maintain compatibility with the updated network rules.

Bons also questioned XRP Ledger’s Unique Node List model, which determines the validators individual network participants trust during consensus. Unlike Bitcoin’s proof-of-work mechanism, XRP Ledger relies on trusted validators to reach agreement on transaction validation.

Ripple and the XRP Ledger Foundation publish recommended validator lists that node operators can adopt through default configurations. Although anyone can operate an XRP Ledger validator, meaningful consensus participation depends on other operators including that validator.

Official documentation warns that poorly coordinated validator selections could cause individual nodes to diverge from the broader network. Bons argues that organizations publishing recommended lists consequently exercise considerable influence over validator selection and network governance.

Decentralization Debate Extends Beyond Software Transparency

Bons’ allegations concern XRP Ledger’s validator trust arrangements and restrictions on unpublished security code, raising questions about the network’s independence.

Meanwhile, developers plan to publish the withheld code alongside technical details explaining the security fixes introduced in version 3.4.1, amid disputes over validator selection, software transparency, and the influence of organizations publishing recommended validator lists.
