Social sentiment around $XRP has dropped to its most negative point since August 17, according to data from on-chain analytics firm Santiment. The reading marks a sharp shift in crowd psychology as October begins, with pessimism now clearly dominating online discussion of the token.
Santiment recorded a bullish-to-bearish comment ratio of just 0.67 for XRP, meaning there were roughly 67 optimistic remarks for every 100 pessimistic ones across major platforms. A ratio below 1.0 means negative commentary represents the majority of tracked discussions on X, Reddit, Telegram, and other crypto communities.
The pessimism is not isolated to XRP. Ethereum sentiment has also softened, with its bullish-to-bearish ratio falling to 0.89, its weakest reading since June 7. While both assets are under social pressure, XRP's reading is notably more severe.
The mood shift comes despite a period of relative price activity. Brief surges of optimism coincided with a September rally, but by early October, sentiment had slid back toward the lower end of its recent range. Some in the community have pointed to frustration that positive developments on the XRP Ledger, including institutional adoption progress, have yet to translate into sustained price gains.
A Contrarian Signal Worth Watching
Santiment has long framed extreme crowd pessimism as a potential contrarian indicator rather than a straightforward sell signal. The firm's reasoning is that when social media is saturated with bearish expectations, a substantial portion of those inclined to sell may have already done so, leaving room for the market to move against the prevailing mood.
Santiment has previously noted that elevated fear and uncertainty can sometimes precede price stabilisation or rebounds. That said, the firm cautions that sentiment indicators can shift quickly and do not guarantee a near-term reversal. Prices can continue to decline even as pessimism intensifies.
For now, the data reflects a market where crowd emotion has turned sharply negative. Whether that exhaustion translates into a buying opportunity or simply reflects a broader period of weakness remains to be seen.
