What to Know

  • XRP became Upbit’s most traded cryptocurrency, generating $319 million as Korean investors shifted capital from technology stocks into digital assets.
  • A negative Kimchi premium shows XRP traded slightly below global prices despite strong Korean demand and unusually high domestic trading activity.
  • Sustained retail demand and technical strength will determine whether XRP maintains its leading position across South Korea’s major cryptocurrency exchanges.

South Korean investors have made XRP the most actively traded cryptocurrency on Upbit as capital moves from technology stocks. CoinMarketCap data shows the XRP/KRW pair generated $319 million, representing 21.86% of all trading activity on the exchange.

Consequently, XRP attracted more turnover than Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Tether despite their larger positions within the global cryptocurrency market. Tether ranked second with $179 million, while Bitcoin generated $125.33 million and Ethereum recorded approximately $92 million.

This imbalance reflects changing preferences among Korean retail traders following several months of weaker cryptocurrency market performance. During the first half of 2026, investors directed substantial capital toward Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix shares.

Both companies benefited from strong interest in artificial intelligence and rising global demand for advanced semiconductor technology. However, improving altcoin prices encouraged traders to secure technology stock profits and redirect funds toward cryptocurrency exchanges.

Upbit’s daily turnover climbed 250% to $1.8 billion, while Bithumb recorded a 132% increase in trading activity. XRP led the movement and attracted more than $418 million in trading volume during the initial capital rotation.

Negative Kimchi Premium Reveals the Scale of XRP’s Korean Market Influence

Strong Korean demand supported XRP’s breakout from a long-term downward trend that had restricted its price since July 2025. XRP reached approximately $1.51, equivalent to nearly 2,073 won across South Korea’s major cryptocurrency trading platforms.

Moreover, buyers pushed the token above resistance levels that had prevented meaningful recovery throughout the wider market downturn. Despite enormous activity, XRP’s Kimchi premium remained negative at approximately 0.5% across exchanges based in South Korea.

A positive premium usually develops when cryptocurrency prices on Korean exchanges exceed comparable prices available through international markets. However, the negative reading shows XRP traded slightly below global prices despite commanding unusually strong domestic turnover. This structure indicates Korean investors may influence global XRP liquidity without creating an isolated premium within their local market.

Sustained Retail Demand Will Determine XRP’s Upbit Dominance

Retail participation remains central because XRP represents more than one-fifth of Upbit’s entire daily cryptocurrency trading volume. However, maintaining that dominance requires sustained demand from investors reallocating profits from South Korea’s valuable technology sector.

Korean exchanges previously reported weaker revenue as investors reduced cryptocurrency exposure during the extended digital asset downturn. Hence, rising turnover offers Upbit and Bithumb an opportunity to rebuild activity following weaker results earlier in 2026.

XRP’s performance depends on whether Korean traders maintain substantial volumes while buyers defend the token’s technical breakout. Ultimately, stable demand and balanced international pricing will determine whether XRP preserves its dominant position across Korean exchanges.
