Crypto analyst Ali Martinez (@ali_charts) posted a chart showing a sharp spike in large XRP transactions. He declared, “XRP WHALES ARE BACK!” sharing data showing that whale transactions exceeding $1 million surged 280% between August 16 and August 17.
The number of such transactions climbed to more than 38 in a single day. That level of large-wallet activity has raised questions about what major holders are positioning for.
XRP Fights to Hold $1
XRP is currently trading at $0.9973 and is struggling to stay close to $1. It recently hit a low of $0.9884, its lowest level since late 2024. Despite price struggles, the asset has seen a 15.5% spike in 24-hour trading volume, with value now sitting at 937.6 million. This shows that traders are active in the market.
Martinez noted that the asset is currently down 73% from its all-time high. That context explains the rise in whale activity. The dip below $1 must have prompted many whales looking for a buying opportunity to enter the market.
The $1 level has acted as both psychological and technical support for weeks. Multiple analysts predicted that XRP would sweep below $1, and these whales seem to be making the best of that opportunity.
Is This an Accumulation Signal?
Not everyone reads the spike as a straightforward buy signal. One commenter raised an important point in the replies. He noted that a $1 million+ transfer is an exchange inflow about as often as it is accumulation. Santiment counts size, not intent.
He recommended pairing the whale transaction data with exchange netflow data before concluding. Without knowing whether these transfers are moving XRP onto exchanges or into private wallets, the signal remains open to interpretation.
XRP’s Price Direction
Some in the community believe XRP could fall further before it recovers. One community member suggested the price could move toward $0.50. Martinez offered a more measured view. He stated that $0.70 could be the floor, but added that a break above $1.06 would open up significant upside potential.
What the Data Suggests
The surge in whale transactions is notable regardless of direction. Large holders are active. Whether they are accumulating at a discount or rotating into exchanges, significant capital is moving through the XRP Ledger.
Martinez’s observation that the asset is still down 73% from its all-time high puts the current price in perspective. Many investors see XRP below $1 as a major opportunity. They believe a continued decline could pull more capital from whales.
