@yugalabs and @BoredApeYC have launched Mudwater, a trading card series built on @Solana. Holders of Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) and Mutant Ape Yacht Club (MAYC) NFTs can claim packs now. Every trade of a Mudwater card also funds purchases of ApeCoin ($APE), which are paid out to holders of the new cards.
What Mudwater includes
The debut set is called Swamp Origins. It contains 120 artworks built around Bored Ape imagery, in four tiers: standard, foil, serialized and a rare cracked-ice edition.Crypto Briefing reports that the collection went live on Oct. 17, 2026. Eight of the cracked-ice cards are one-of-one pieces, according to TechFlow.
Each digital card is a Solana NFT, with a physical counterpart held in a vault, according to Tron Weekly. The planned supply is 10,000 boxes. Each box holds 24 packs of 10 cards, which works out to 240,000 packs and 2.4 million cards, TokenPost reports.
Each Bored Ape qualifies for 10 packs and each Mutant Ape for two. That puts more than 140,000 packs in the holder claim pool, which TokenPost says is open through mid-January 2027. Claiming is free apart from network fees, while opening a pack costs 8 USDC, according to CryptoTicker.
How the 2.5% ApeCoin mechanism works
Each Mudwater NFT trade carries a 2.5% reflection that buys $APE and distributes it to collectors in proportion to their holdings, per TokenPost. Cards, packs and Totems trade on OpenSea, Crypto Briefing reports.
The 2.5% is not the only fee. ETHNews reports that a separate 2.5% publisher royalty applies, so buyers and sellers face a combined 5% charge. The same report cautions that trading volume does not equal net demand for $APE, since reward recipients may sell their tokens and offset buying.
Crypto Briefing also notes that the scale of $APE buying depends on how actively the cards change hands. CryptoTicker adds that NFT trading volume has been thin for months, so the payout to holders will only become clear in the coming weeks.
The launch is also notable for its chain choice. BAYC, the $APE token and the Totems that unlock claims all sit on Ethereum, while the cards and their market sit on Solana, according to Solana Compass. The outlet says Yuga Labs has not publicly explained why it chose Solana.
