Zcash Community Grants (ZCG) has introduced a plan to redirect approximately $124 million in Zcash tokens from its treasury and future allocations to bolster mining rewards, prompting questions from industry participants over fund transparency and oversight.
Proposal details and potential impact
On Thursday, ZCG recommended transferring 36,200 ZEC, valued at about $46 million, from its current treasury holdings into the Network Sustainability Mechanism (NSM), a mechanism designed to secure ongoing funding for future mining rewards. This transfer would reduce the committee’s treasury from roughly 91,500 ZEC to around 55,200 ZEC, worth about $70 million at current prices.
Alongside the treasury transfer, ZCG proposed foregoing an additional 62,000 ZEC, or $78.5 million, in future token allocations. The committee plans to gradually reduce its funding over the next eight years, extending into 2032 rather than ending the automatic allocation in 2028 as previously scheduled. Both changes combined would shift an estimated 98,000 ZEC, currently valued near $124 million, to support the NSM and ongoing miner incentives.
ZCG described the plan as preliminary and indicated it will present a full proposal for community evaluation at a later date.
Key figures in the crypto community have voiced concerns regarding the proposal and the overall size of the ZCG treasury. Helius co-founder and CEO Mert Mumtaz labeled the plan insufficient, arguing that ZCG’s reserves are already too extensive and that spending decisions should involve greater accountability to ZEC holders.
Tyler Winklevoss, co-founder of Gemini, echoed these concerns after Mumtaz reported on social media that a ZCG committee member had unfollowed him on X. Winklevoss remarked that such conduct called into question the suitability of granting oversight of $110 million to the committee.
Helius CEO Mert Mumtaz criticized the proposal as inadequate, emphasizing that the treasury’s size is already too large and asserting that ZEC holders deserve transparent and accountable fund management. Tyler Winklevoss questioned the committee’s oversight capabilities, referencing recent social media tensions as evidence of inadequate suitability for managing significant resources.
Context and ongoing discussions
These criticisms build on previous calls for changes to Zcash’s funding model. Zcash co-founder Sean Bowe previously suggested eliminating ZCG’s automatic allocation of 8% of new ZEC issuances and redirecting that share directly into the NSM, while leaving existing treasury balances untouched.
As the Zcash community weighs these proposals, participants have increased their monitoring of governance and funding decisions, highlighting the importance of transparency and appropriate oversight for large community treasuries.
With over $124 million potentially moving from the treasury to long-term mining rewards, Zcash participants will likely look for real-time tracking of treasury holdings, funding flows, and community votes. CryptoAppsy lets users follow these dynamics by providing up-to-date charts and news streams focused on ZEC’s treasury and governance developments, helping the community stay informed during critical decision periods.
