@ZcashLabs has released Zcash JS, a free, open-source developer kit for building $ZEC applications in JavaScript and TypeScript. The toolkit lets developers read chain data, run lightweight wallets, and sign and send transactions from web browsers and Node servers.
The release is an early, experimental test version. A full send-and-receive run in a live browser has not yet been signed off. The main @Zcash account shared the launch and called on developers to take notice.
According to the project's GitHub page, the package is an experimental TypeScript SDK for Zcash chain queries and local wallets on Node and in browsers. The repository lists public JSON-RPC queries, light wallet queries and streams, and local accounts with scanning, signing and submission. It also describes the current build as an experimental release candidate.
Zcash Labs has described the kit as a way to build web, server and mobile applications on Zcash. PANews reported that the applications it can support include wallets, light clients and data dashboards. The same report said the team plans to keep maintaining the toolkit and build supporting tools and code libraries around it, and that documentation and the GitHub repository are now public.
Market data showed a short-term reaction. Stocktwits reported that $ZEC outperformed $BTC on Monday as the toolkit launched.
Zcash is a privacy-focused cryptocurrency. Coin Bureau notes that it uses zero-knowledge proofs, known as zk-SNARKs, to support optional shielded payments, and that it has a 21 million ZEC supply cap. Transactions can be transparent or shielded, so privacy depends on how users send and store funds.
A JavaScript toolkit lowers the barrier for web developers who work mainly in that language. Because the same import is designed to work in both Node and browser applications, according to the GitHub documentation, teams could in theory build a wallet or dashboard without writing Rust or maintaining a separate runtime. The experimental status means production use carries risk, and developers should treat the release as a test version until the live browser flow is confirmed.
Zcash already has other community efforts in this area. A proposal on the Zcash Community Forum describes a separate TypeScript layer over WebZjs, aimed at simplifying payment flows in web apps. That suggests continued demand for easier JavaScript tooling around the network.
