The Zcash Foundation has announced that Network Upgrade 7 (NU7) will activate at block 3,543,405, expected to occur around November 5. This marks a key step forward for Zcash, a privacy-focused cryptocurrency launched in 2016, as it undertakes one of its most significant technical upgrades in recent years.
Major protocol changes to accelerate block production
NU7 aims to significantly accelerate the network by reducing the target block interval from 75 seconds to 25 seconds. This change allows transactions to be confirmed faster, improving the overall user experience while maintaining the current daily issuance of ZEC, the network’s native token.
The upgrade introduces a new Network Sustainability Mechanism designed to support future mining incentives. Under this mechanism, 60% of transaction fees will be temporarily removed from active circulation and set aside for future mining rewards. The Zcash Foundation clarified that these fees will not be permanently burned, nor will the longstanding 21 million ZEC supply cap be affected.
NU7 follows previous network security improvements, which addressed vulnerabilities related to shielded transactions. On October 22, the release of Zebra 7.0.0—Zcash’s Rust node implementation—resolved seven additional security issues and prepared node operators for a seamless transition to the new protocol.
Faster transaction confirmations will likely make the network more efficient; however, analysts suggest this alone may not immediately result in increased demand for ZEC.

Derivatives activity surges as institutional flows diverge
Speculative trading in ZEC derivatives has recently intensified, according to data from analytics provider CoinGlass. ZEC futures open interest grew to about 2.17 million tokens on November 4, up from 1.96 million two days earlier. This increase follows a September short squeeze, when traders holding bearish positions were forced to close due to a sharp rally in the underlying cryptocurrency.
In contrast, institutional activity in Zcash-focused investment products paints a weaker picture. Across two recent sessions, these funds recorded net outflows of $3.58 million and $3.63 million, reflecting a continued pullback despite the uptick in derivatives speculation.
Date
ZEC Futures Open Interest
Institutional Product Flows
November 2
1.96 million ZEC
– $3.58 million
November 4
2.17 million ZEC
– $3.63 million
Analysts observe that this divergence echoes earlier periods when rising ZEC prices coincided with ETF outflows, illustrating that derivatives positioning and institutional flows can move in opposite directions.
The divergence between surging ZEC futures open interest and continued investment product outflows suggests that short-term traders are increasing risk exposure even as institutional investors take a more cautious approach.
ZEC faces technical hurdles and heightened volatility risk
From a technical perspective, ZEC trades near resistance between $1,300 and $1,320, aligning with a key moving-average area watched by market participants. A sustained move above this region could open the way to $1,370, followed by the psychological barrier at $1,400. These targets represent a potential upside of about 9.5% from the recent reference price of $1,278.
However, a failure to maintain support in the $1,200 to $1,210 zone may see ZEC retest lower levels at $1,150 or even $1,100. Recent history has shown that liquidations can accelerate declines when leveraged positions unwind in volatile market conditions.
While bullish momentum remains modest compared to September’s surge, market participants continue to watch whether ZEC can build on recent recovery efforts or face renewed pressure from downside risk.
