Crypto markets delivered a sharp reminder on September 21 of what happens when too many traders lean the same way at the wrong time. A broad price surge across digital assets wiped out $928.8 million in leveraged positions over 24 hours, catching short sellers badly offside, according to data from @coinglass_com.

Shorts Take the Brunt

Of the total liquidated, $767.3 million came from short positions, more than four times the $161.4 million that hit longs. In all, 130,256 traders were forced out of their positions. The scale of short-side losses reflects a market that had been leaning heavily bearish heading into the move, leaving bears exposed when prices turned.

Bitcoin led the damage. $BTC positions accounted for $503.2 million of liquidations, with $ETH close behind at $201.7 million. The figures are consistent with the broader pattern seen throughout 2026, where sharp upside moves have repeatedly flushed out over-leveraged short sellers.

The mechanics here are well understood. A liquidation happens when a trader borrows to make a bigger bet than their money would cover, the market moves against them, and the exchange closes the position automatically before the losses exceed what they put down. When that process hits short sellers en masse, each forced closure pushed prices up and created a cascade of liquidations.

Context Within a Volatile Year

The September 21 event sits within a year marked by several large liquidation episodes. The largest single-day short liquidation on record remains the October 10, 2025 event at $2.47 billion, according to CoinGlass. More recently, a rally in August sent Bitcoin toward $85,000 and produced back-to-back sessions of billion-dollar-plus liquidations.

@coinglass_com aggregates derivatives data from more than 30 exchanges including Binance, OKX, Bybit, and Deribit. It is worth noting that its liquidation figures are modeled rather than exchange-confirmed, making them directionally useful but not necessarily dollar-precise.
