Bitcoin Holds Around $81,000: CFTC Steps Up as Crypto Market Rebounds
CryptoCompass editorial visual for altcoins coverage.
  • Bitcoin trades near $80,900 after a 6% daily gain.
  • Binance BTC netflow hit +4,617.90 BTC on September 15.
  • Stablecoin activity rose 190% above its quarterly baseline.
  • CFTC crypto rulemaking advances as the CLARITY Act stalls.

Bitcoin traded around $80,900 on September 18, retaining most of its latest gains as major cryptocurrencies moved higher. Total crypto market capitalization reached roughly $2.76 trillion, while the Fear & Greed Index rose to 73, its “Greed” zone.

Exchange data add another dimension to the rally. According to CryptoQuant metrics, Binance is seeing a sharp increase in both Bitcoin deposits and stablecoin activity, while the Coinbase Premium Index remains negative. That split points to stronger liquidity offshore without the same confirmation from U.S. spot trading.

Solana and HYPE Lead the Crypto Rally

Solana and Hyperliquid’s HYPE were the strongest performers among the tracked assets, both gaining more than 11% over 24 hours. Data from CoinMarketCap reveals that Ethereum, XRP and Dogecoin advanced more than 7%, while BNB gained about 5%.

Zcash bucked the trend with a 0.71% decline after its recent surge. The Altcoin Season Index remained at 45, below levels normally associated with a broad altcoin rotation.

Binance Stablecoin Activity Jumps 190%

According to CryptoQuant’s exchange metrics, Binance recorded a +4,617.90 BTC netflow on September 15, the largest daily reading in the reported window. Across exchanges, Bitcoin netflows averaged +877 BTC per day during the week ending September 16.

The stablecoin data are more striking. Binance stablecoin inflow transactions averaged 48,230 per day over the same week, 190% above the quarterly baseline. The seven-day average accelerated sharply during September after spending much of July and August at substantially lower levels.

The latest readings leave three market signals worth watching:

  • BTC supply: Positive netflows have increased the amount of Bitcoin available on exchanges.
  • Stablecoin liquidity: Binance has recorded a sharp rise in capital that can be deployed into crypto assets.
  • U.S. demand: The Coinbase Premium Index remains negative, showing weaker pricing on Coinbase relative to offshore venues.

The third signal complicates an otherwise stronger liquidity picture. A 6% Bitcoin rally accompanied by a negative Coinbase premium suggests that U.S. spot participation has not strengthened at the same pace as activity offshore.

It also changes how the September 15 Binance inflow should be read. The +4,617.90 BTC represents additional potential supply, but it arrived during a period when stablecoin activity was running far above its recent baseline. The balance between those two flows matters more than either reading in isolation.

September 3 and 4 contain no price, funding or flow prints in the underlying dataset, so the prior-week comparison uses five sessions rather than seven. Binance age-band inflows for the 3–6 month and 12–18 month cohorts were excluded because the underlying denominators were too small for a reliable comparison.

Bitcoin Hashrate Rebounds Toward 900 EH/s

CryptoQuant’s True Hashrate data show Bitcoin mining activity recovering toward 900 EH/s after a pronounced decline from its previous peak.

Bitcoin network true hashrate chart from 2019 to September 2026, showing hashrate rising above 1,000 EH/s in late 2025 before declining toward 900 EH/s, alongside Bitcoin’s price. Bitcoin’s true hashrate is hovering around 900 EH/s after retreating from its late-2025 peak above 1,000 EH/s.

The rebound suggests some mining capacity is returning as Bitcoin stabilizes around $80,000. More important than the absolute reading is the reversal in direction: the smoothed hashrate measure had been falling from levels above 1,000 EH/s before turning higher in the latest data.

That gives the price recovery some support from network activity, although the hashrate rebound remains at an early stage. A continuation toward its previous range would provide stronger evidence that the recent contraction in mining capacity has run its course.

CFTC Moves Ahead After CLARITY Act Setback

The CFTC submitted a new proposal on Thursday, but its details remain undisclosed. It is not yet clear which crypto assets or trading platforms would fall within its scope, what requirements would apply, or how broadly the agency intends to exercise its authority.

Its arrival follows the Senate’s September 15 failure to advance the CLARITY Act, which sought to establish a broader statutory framework for digital asset markets and expand the CFTC’s authority over digital commodities.

The distinction is important. The CFTC can continue developing rules within authority it already holds, but an agency rulemaking cannot independently grant the broader jurisdiction contemplated by legislation such as the CLARITY Act.

Coinbase Premium Becomes the Next Test

The negative Coinbase Premium Index now stands out against an otherwise stronger set of market data.

Bitcoin is holding around $80,900, major altcoins are participating in the rebound, Binance stablecoin activity is running 190% above its quarterly baseline and True Hashrate has started to recover. Yet Coinbase continues to price Bitcoin below offshore venues.

A return of the premium toward positive territory would signal that U.S. spot demand is catching up with the liquidity already visible on Binance. Until then, the latest rally remains noticeably stronger in offshore flows than in U.S. spot pricing.

For traders, that divergence is more informative now than whether Bitcoin prints $80,900 or briefly crosses $81,000.
