Bitcoin News Today: Can SEC's 3X ETP Rule Support BTC After the Fall?

Bitcoin touched the $87,000 zone on Friday, then fell back. BTC now trades near $84,589, down 2.09% in 24 hours, after a heavy week of US economic news. At the same time, spot Bitcoin ETF flows have also turned thin on October 2.

So, why did weak US payroll data put pressure on Bitcoin, and could the October 14 CPI report trigger another move?

Bitcoin Price Today: BTC Price, Market Data and Key Levels

The 24-hour chart is simple. Price began near $86,130, rose to about $87,000, then fell to a low near $84,000 and steadied around $84,500. Crypto news today shows the wider market is soft too.

BTC price snapshot from CoinMarketCap as of October 3:

Bitcoin Price Today

  • Price: $84,589.10 (down 2.09% in 24 hours)

  • Market cap: $1.69 trillion

  • 24-hour volume: about $33.5 billion, down 12.83%

  • Supply: 20.09 million BTC in circulation, out of 21 million

  • Treasury holdings: 1.34 million BTC

The crypto market today holds about $2.98 trillion in total value, with Bitcoin dominance at 57.1%.

For why Bitcoin is down today, it has three drivers:

  • Broader market weakness, with one summary linking the move to gold

  • A failed push above $86,500 resistance, as per CoinMarketCap

  • Slower spot Bitcoin ETF inflows since September

The first driver traces back to the jobs report.

US Payroll Data: What the Jobs Report Showed and Why Bitcoin Fell

US Payroll data, current report versus prior months:

  • Jobs added: 29,000, against forecasts of roughly 84,000 to 90,000

  • August: revised down to 133,000 from 162,000

  • July: revised to a loss of 10,000 jobs from a gain of 21,000

  • Unemployment: 4.2%, up from 4.1%

Bitcoin news traders read this two ways. Weak hiring lowers the odds of another Fed rate hike, which usually helps risk assets, so BTC rose at first. But slower hiring also signals a cooling economy, and the revisions erased 60,000 jobs. That second reading won out.

CPI Index on October 14: What Inflation Data Could Mean for Bitcoin

The next test is the September CPI data set to release on October 14. The previous report, August report, showed:

  • Monthly CPI: up 0.4%, after 0.1% in July

  • Annual CPI: 3.4%, unchanged from July

  • Core CPI: 2.4% annual, down from 2.5%

These numbers matter because the Fed raised rates to 3.75%-4% on September 16, its first hike since 2023. Markets still expect another in December, and CPI helps decide that. Possible outcomes for Bitcoin news:

  • Hotter than 3.4%: hike odds rise, and BTC could test $80,000

  • In line: little change, with ETF flows taking over

  • Cooler: hike fears ease, and a move toward $87,000 becomes likelier

These are general patterns, not forecasts.

Spot Bitcoin ETF Flows: October 2 Data and What the Numbers Signal

Crypto ETF data adds a third clue to this Bitcoin update. On October 2, per SoSoValue's tracker:

Spot Bitcoin ETF Flows

  • Bitcoin ETF: net inflow of $31.69 million, with Fidelity adding $29.28 million

  • Total net assets: $109.16 billion

  • Cumulative net inflow: $57.63 billion

  • Ether ETF: outflow of $17.25 million

  • XRP ETF: first October outflow, $3.28 million

  • Solana ETF: inflow of $1.30 million

A BTC ETF market needs steady buying to support price, and Bitcoin news on flows will matter next.

Bitcoin Price Views: Ted's Key Levels and the 2026-27 Bull Run Hopes

Two social-media views frame the risk in Bitcoin news today moving ahead. Analyst Ted (@TedPillows) says the $87,000 area acted as a ceiling. He wants a weekly close above $87,500 for a strong rally, and warns of a possible drop below $80,000 otherwise.

Another market expert with the account name @AshCrypto, drew attention to Bitcoin’s historical price action. It noted that Bitcoin hit cycle lows when the Fear and Greed Index fell to 5 in 2019, 6 in 2022, and 5 in 2026. The pattern raises the question of whether $57,800 marked the latest bottom.

What Could Help Bitcoin Price: SEC's New 3x ETP Rule

The biggest new item in Bitcoin news is a rule from the SEC. On October 2, rule change SR-CboeBZX-2026-065, which lets Cboe BZX list six 3x leveraged ETPs from Volatility Shares' VS Trust. They target triple the daily return of Bitcoin, Ether, gold, silver, crude oil and natural gas, the first US approval of 3x crypto products.

Nothing can trade yet, though. The trust's S-1 registration must become effective first, and no launch date exists. The risk is also clear.

Other Bitcoin news factors that could help:

  • A cooler CPI report on October 14

  • Steady buying from ETF funds

  • Weak jobs data keeping October hike odds low

  • Uptober, the nickname for October's strong past record, though seasonal patterns are not promises

Bitcoin crypto news readers should expect volatility around each date.
