Bitcoin's August curse: analyst says history points to another painful month

August has a habit of being unkind to Bitcoin. And with the month now arriving, crypto analyst Ali Martinez is flagging a four-year track record that bulls would rather ignore.

In a post on X, Martinez noted that Bitcoin has averaged a 10 percent decline during August over the past four years, a pattern consistent enough to warrant serious attention heading into what is already a fragile market environment.

Four years of August pain

The data Martinez points to isn't a single bad year, it's a recurring seasonal pattern. Over four consecutive Augusts, Bitcoin has posted negative returns on average, making it one of the most consistently weak months in the crypto calendar.

Martinez mentioned that Bitcoin fell 13.88% in August 2022, 11.29% in August 2023, 8.60% in August 2024 and 6.49% in August 2025.

The 10 percent average decline figure suggests this isn't noise. It's a seasonal tendency that has repeated across different market structures, different regulatory environments, and different demand conditions.

Whether driven by reduced institutional activity during summer, post-halving cycle dynamics, or broader macro factors that tend to surface in late summer, the outcome has been the same, August tends to hurt.

The setup heading in

The timing of Martinez's warning matters. Bitcoin is already navigating one of its most difficult stretches in recent memory.

Apparent demand has been negative for over 200 consecutive days, the Coinbase Premium Index has stayed below zero for weeks, and spot Bitcoin ETFs have recorded consecutive weeks of net outflows.

Peter Schiff added to the bearish chorus this week, publicly forecasting a "much bigger selloff in Bitcoin" as he predicted the broader tech correction would spread across markets.

Will this August be different?

Martinez left the question open rather than calling it either way.

The conditions that have historically driven August weakness, thin institutional participation, macro uncertainty, and seasonal selling, are all present to varying degrees right now.

Whether a regulatory catalyst, a Fed rate decision, or a sudden shift in ETF flows could break the pattern remains the only real counterargument

History, for now, is not on Bitcoin's side.
