@base has launched Base MCP, a Model Context Protocol server that lets AI agents connect directly to a user's Base Account and act onchain. Once connected, an agent can swap tokens, execute trades, manage a portfolio, and draw on plugins from leading Base applications, all without further manual input from the user.
A Full Agentic Stack Takes Shape
The launch fills in the final piece of a layered architecture that @coinbase has been assembling. The Payments MCP handles wallet access, onramp flows, and x402 payments. Agentic Market functions as a discovery layer. Base MCP now serves as the execution layer, operating directly on an Ethereum Layer 2. AgentKit and Agentic Wallets sit at the base of the stack, covering smart account setup and programmable spending limits.
AgentKit is Coinbase Developer Platform's toolkit for giving AI agents a crypto wallet and onchain interactions, designed to be framework-agnostic and wallet-agnostic. Agentic Wallets build on that foundation, offering wallet infrastructure designed specifically for AI agents, giving them the power to spend, earn, and trade autonomously while maintaining enterprise-grade security and programmable guardrails.
Agents transact via Coinbase's x402, a payments protocol built for autonomous AI use cases that has already processed 50 million transactions. Through x402, agents acquire API keys, purchase compute, access premium data streams, and pay for storage autonomously. Agentic Wallets can support gasless transactions on the Coinbase-incubated Base Layer 2.
MCP Becomes the Standard for Agent Connectivity
Base MCP's arrival reflects how quickly the Model Context Protocol has become the default integration layer for AI agents across the industry. MCP is an open standard introduced by Anthropic in November 2024 to standardize the way AI systems integrate and share data with external tools, systems, and data sources. Just one year after its launch, MCP achieved industry-wide adoption backed by competing giants including OpenAI, Google, Microsoft, and AWS.
Applying that same standard to a live Layer 2 network signals a meaningful step beyond developer experimentation. The agentic onchain economy is moving from specification to mainnet, with @coinbase building out the rails across every layer of the stack.
