Crypto market sentiment has entered extreme greed territory, with @CoinMarketCap's Fear and Greed Index climbing to 80 on September 21, up from 72 the previous day. The reading puts sentiment just two points below this year's high of 82, recorded on August 27, and a world away from February's low of 5.

Market Cap Surges to $2.94 Trillion

The global crypto market cap reached $2.94 trillion, a 6.07% increase over the last 24 hours.Total crypto market volume over the same period hit $146.49 billion, a 108.31% increase.Bitcoin's dominance rose to 59.26%, up 0.60% on the day.

$BTC gained over 7% to trade around $86,700, while $ETH added 5.6% to approximately $2,765. Bitcoin and Ethereum prices surged despite the recent failure of the CLARITY Act, with both assets hitting 8-month highs earlier in the session.

What the Index Is Telling Markets

The CMC Fear and Greed Index is a proprietary tool developed by CoinMarketCap that measures prevailing sentiment in the cryptocurrency market, ranging from 0 to 100, where a lower value indicates extreme fear and a higher value indicates extreme greed.According to CoinMarketCap's methodology, any reading exceeding 80 qualifies as extreme greed.

The index aggregates volatility, momentum, volume, dominance, and social data to quantify sentiment on a 0 to 100 scale. Historically, periods of extreme greed can signal that markets are running hot, though sentiment alone is not a reliable timing indicator. The indicator is noted to not be a standalone tool for determining future market direction and should be evaluated alongside other market data.

The sharp move in sentiment comes after a difficult first half of the year. The second quarter of 2026 saw the crypto market extend its slide into a third consecutive quarter of decline, with total market capitalization falling 12.6% to end Q2 at $2.1 trillion, its lowest point since September 2024. The recovery since then has been significant.
