Key Points:

  • EigenLayer introduced ELIP-002, a penalty mechanism to slash stakes for underperforming operators.
  • The EigenLayer ELIP-002 proposal enables AVS to punish dishonest operators and reward stakers for increased slashing risks.
Ethereum re-staking protocol EigenLayer has announced its second improvement proposal, ELIP-002, to further enhance its crypto-economic framework and increase accountability within its ecosystem.

EigenLayer ELIP-002 Unveiled to Strengthen Accountability

The proposal EigenLayer ELIP-002 implements a penalization system where stakes should be slashed when the operator cannot deliver satisfactory service.

AVS will now have some backbone and tools that may use punishments to balance incentives of good service operators. In turn, this novel mechanism embodies two key new primitives developed at the core of Eigen Labs-Unique Stake and Operator Sets.

Unique Stake ensures that every AVS has exclusive access to certain penalizable stakes, which can help minimise systemic risks by compartmentalizing potential failures. Operator Sets, on the other hand, enable AVS to dispatch tasks to defined groups of operators for better and more precise accountability, while rewards are distributed much more efficiently.

Rewards v2 Upgrade Enhances Restaking Flexibility

In addition, EigenLayer ELIP-002 will enable AVSs to create cryptoeconomic commitments, whereby operators are penalized through slashing for cheating or acting incorrectly. Simultaneously, the framework provides a mechanism whereby the AVS can compensate operators and stakers for increased slashing risk in return for better participation and reliability of staking activities.

Besides ELIP-002, EigenLayer recently introduced Rewards v2, an upgrade to its reward system. The upgrade offers a set of more flexible tools for AVSs, enabling operator-adjusted rewards to be recorded directly on-chain. Rewards v2 should help improve the adaptability of restaking mechanisms and lead to a more dynamic ecosystem.
