Social sentiment across cryptocurrency markets has entered a new bearish phase, according to analytics firm Santiment. The latest data highlights that both Ethereum and XRP have reached their most negative social sentiment levels in months, as negative comments dominate online discussions.

Sharp downturns in ETH and XRP sentiment

Data from Santiment, a well-known blockchain analytics provider, tracks the ratio of positive to negative mentions for leading cryptocurrencies. As of early October, sentiment for XRP has dropped to 0.67 positive comments per negative comment, marking the lowest point since August 17. This shift occurred just before XRP saw a price surge of more than 50%.

Meanwhile, sentiment surrounding Ethereum has hit its most bearish level since June 7. Santiment’s chart displays these trends across several months, overlaying commentary ratios with Bitcoin’s price movement for context.

Sentiment oscillated throughout the period, with sharp increases in positive comments during price rallies and steep declines during market consolidations. The most recent drop now places both ETH and XRP at the lower end of their historical sentiment ranges for this cycle.

During the same period, Bitcoin’s price rose steadily through August and September, reaching nearly $84,700 before experiencing a slight pullback in October.

Sentiment and market signals

Historically, sharp downturns in social sentiment have drawn interest as possible contrarian indicators. During previous market cycles, periods of peak retail pessimism sometimes preceded rebounds in price, according to several market observers. These references point out that negativity often coincides with local market bottoms.

However, some community voices urge caution, noting that negative social fundamentals are not equivalent to fundamental weaknesses in the assets themselves. One user commented that a low sentiment reading does not alone constitute a definitive buy opportunity.

Santiment is known for its on-chain and social analytics reports, used by a wide spectrum of investors and researchers in the cryptocurrency sector.

Community responses and perspectives

Crypto community members offered a range of reactions. One commentator suggested that sentiment extremes reveal emotional trader positions and can be relevant for tracking shifts in on-chain activity. Another voice highlighted that instances of extreme sentiment often coincide with changes in market positioning and momentum.

Other community members urged a more balanced view, noting that bearish sentiment can reverse unexpectedly fast. Several participants expressed confidence that the current low mood is temporary, with some stating the market bottom is already in. Another observer remarked that when social sentiment is low, it frequently indicates that retail traders have already exited their positions.

One observer argued that extremes in sentiment are significant mainly because they show where traders stand psychologically, noting that shifts in mood can precede changes in on-chain data and market trends.
