Ethereum is gearing up to launch its first-ever hackathon, dubbed “Attackathon,” with a $2 million reward pool.

The Ethereum Protocol Security (EPS) research team announced this event in a statement published on July 8, 2024. According to the team, the event will be the largest crowdsourced security audit of Ethereum’s codebase to date.

The Attackathon will begin with an educational phase, providing participants with live technical walkthroughs and resources to prepare them to identify potential vulnerabilities in the blockchain’s protocol. This preparatory stage ensures that all participants are well-equipped to understand and detect possible security issues.

Following the educational phase, the event will transition into a four-week competition where security researchers, including top experts from Immunefi, will actively search for vulnerabilities in Ethereum’s protocol code.

The EPS team noted that they would be collaborating with Immunefi, a blockchain security platform, because of its “track record of identifying and mitigating security risks.”

The reward pool, initially seeded with $500,000, is open to community sponsorships until August 1, 2024. Sponsors will receive NFTs acknowledging their contributions and will be featured on a Sponsorship Leaderboard. The team added that more details about the sponsorship program will be announced after this date.

Upon conclusion of the Attackathon, Immunefi will compile a comprehensive report detailing all discovered vulnerabilities. This initiative not only offers significant rewards but also provides an opportunity for participants to gain recognition within the Ethereum community and contribute to the blockchain’s security.

This event aligns with the growing trend of blockchain-focused hackathons in the tech world. For context, the decentralized education protocol Open Campus recently announced a $1 million hackathon to promote dApp development on the EDU Chain.

These events also reflect the increasing integration of blockchain technology in various sectors, including education, where adoption is rapidly growing. According to a Worldmetrics report, the global blockchain in education market is projected to reach $1.34 billion by 2023, with 59% of higher education institutions adopting or considering blockchain technology.
