The Ethereum Foundation has announced a new testing network named Hoodi to address issues related to validator exit times and modifications to the deposit contract in Ethereum’s (ETH) test networks. The Hoodi test network is set to activate the Pectra update on March 26, 2025. Due to the prolonged validator exit times on the Holesky network, developers and stake operators will now utilize Hoodi. Meanwhile, the Holesky network will continue to be supported until September 2025.

Hoodi as a Solution to Issues in Ethereum Test Networks

During the activation of the Pectra test network, some issues related to the deposit contract emerged in the Ethereum test networks’ client software. While the Sepolia test network quickly overcame this issue, Holesky experienced significant validator exits due to widespread inactivity. This situation delayed the network’s final status and could prolong validators’ complete exits for up to a year.

Consequently, Ethereum developers created the Hoodi test network instead of relying on Holesky for validator testing. The network will enable full validator lifecycle tests by activating the Pectra update during the 2048th epoch on March 26. Holesky will continue testing other Pectra features, excluding the validator exit.

Future Plans for Ethereum Foundation’s Test Networks

The Ethereum ecosystem will continue to offer various test networks for different developers and users. The Holesky network will remain operational for validators and stake operators until September 30, 2025. Client developers will conduct gas, or transaction fee limit increases, and protocol stress tests on this network.

Ethereum Test Networks

The Sepolia test network will continue to be utilized by application developers and middleware teams until September 30, 2026. A new test network is planned to launch in March 2026 to succeed Sepolia.

The Hoodi test network, offered as a long-term solution for validators and stake operators, will be supported until September 30, 2028. This ensures that the network will continue to play a critical role in the development of the Ethereum ecosystem.

What is the Hoodi Test Network?

Hoodi is a newly developed test network for the Ethereum ecosystem. It is optimized for validator testing and stake operations. The Pectra update will activate on March 26, 2025, and support will continue until 2028.
