FIFA to Launch Own Blockchain for NFTs

FIFA, the governing body of football globally, is making a major shift in its Web3 strategy.

The football body announced plans to migrate its NFT collection, FIFA Collect, to a new network called the FIFA Blockchain. This move mirrors FIFA’s long-term interest in blockchain and commitment to digital fan experiences.

The new FIFA chain will be EMV-compatible. This means it will support popular wallets like MetaMask and open the door to broader Ethereum-based ecosystem tools.

In addition, the change effectively ends FIFA’s partnership with Algorand, the original host of its NFTs, and Polygon, which it adopted later to scale its offerings.

According to an FAQ page, the migration won’t begin before May 20, giving users time to prepare. While no immediate action is required, FIFA has confirmed it will share detailed instructions in due time.

In 2022, FIFA chose Algorand. Fast forward to 2025, and the momentum hasn’t stopped.

In Q1 2025 alone, @FIFACollect surpassed the total NFT collectible sales volume of all of 2024.

The organization says the transition is aimed at enabling “new experiences,” improving wallet compatibility, and laying stronger foundations for future innovation. In plain terms, FIFA seems

Ethereum compatibility over third-party chains.

This isn’t FIFA’s first blockchain experiment. In 2022, the organization partnered with Algorand to launch NFTs that captured iconic World Cup moments.

The following year, it expanded to Polygon to scale operations. But with this migration, FIFA prioritizes ecosystem control and EVM compatibility.
