Fiserv brought its digital asset platform into production on October 1, making the Fortune 500 payments giant the latest traditional-finance company to commercialize stablecoin-enabled banking, the company said in a press release. The platform’s first live use case is Roughrider Coin, a U.S. dollar-backed stablecoin from the Bank of North Dakota designed to speed up bank-to-bank settlement across the state.

Roughrider Coin enters production

More than 90 participating banks and credit unions in North Dakota can now access Roughrider Coin through Commercial Center, Fiserv’s commercial online banking system, to move money across the state’s interbank network. VersaBank issues the coin and handles minting, burning, custody and reserve management, while Fireblocks supplies digital asset infrastructure and tokenization services and transactions settle on the Solana blockchain. “Launching Roughrider Coin with Fiserv gives our partner community banks and credit unions a new tool to move money more efficiently,” said Don Morgan, chief executive of the Bank of North Dakota.

A broader push into stablecoin banking

Fiserv said the platform will also support stablecoin card issuance, cross-border payments, programmable commerce and treasury automation, alongside tokenized deposits and U.S. dollar accounts for financial institutions worldwide. “The launch of our digital asset platform is an important milestone for Fiserv and the financial institutions we serve,” said Sunil Sachdev, head of embedded finance and digital assets at Fiserv. “By moving from concept to production with leading institutions, we are helping clients unlock new efficiencies in banking and payments while maintaining the trust, security and regulatory standards they expect.” VersaBank founder and president David Taylor added that pairing Fiserv’s scale with the bank’s regulated digital asset capabilities gives the industry “a trusted foundation to bring stablecoins into established banking and payment systems.”

Traditional finance deepens its stablecoin ties

The launch extends a steady run of banks and payment firms wiring stablecoins into existing rails. Circle and Volante recently brought USDC settlement to bank payment hubs, and HSBC unveiled its own Hong Kong dollar stablecoin, HSBC RedCoin. For North Dakota, Roughrider Coin gives community banks and credit unions a dollar-backed token deposit governed by the Bank of North Dakota and issued by an OCC-chartered U.S. bank, VersaBank USA, underscoring how state and federally regulated institutions are converging on stablecoins as a settlement layer.
