This year’s event is about Web3 gaming. It’s called Web3 Games Unleashed. We sent a crew down there to cover it. So, here’s a live update of GeckoCon 2024.
GeckoCon 2024 started off with a short introduction, followed by the keynote presentation. Zhong Yang Chan was the host for this. He talked about the current state of the blockchain gaming industry.
First off it’s worth mentioning that there’s an upbeat atmosphere. The vibe is very positive. The recent US election result surely helped. Excitement about the current crypto price development is all around.
Back to Zhong tho. He noticed a couple of interesting developments. For example, CoinGecko added 700 game titles per year 700. RPG games take the biggest chunk of the gaming sector with 20.7%. Strategy and Telegram mini-games are taking the next spots. See the picture below.
He mentioned that shooter games are among the most popular games. Adventure and Battle Royal games are also popular. There’s also a shift from PC to mobile going on. Currently, Epic Games lists around 200 Web3-based games. That’s a massive increase compared to 10 games in 2023.
Shortly after the keynote, the first discussion started. Panel participants included among others Yanni Acott, creative director of Heroes of Mavia. Michael Wagner, co-founder and CEO of Star Atlas also took part. See the picture below.
Wagner had an interesting view on Web2 gamers. He thinks that Web3 games don’t need to chase Web2 gamers. In his opinion, Web3 gaming succeeded already. For instance, Star Wars already has players that spend millions of USD on the game. From that point of view, they don’t need Web2 gamers, they would never spend such amounts on gaming.
He also pointed out that Pixels already has 1 million daily users. All panel participants agreed that Web3 eventually will take over Web2 gaming. It’s just a matter of time. They also took a similar approach to their games. That’s a casual approach but with an AAA game.
To sum up, GeckoCon 2024 has an exciting vibe going on. Bobby Ong and TM Lee, the CoinGecko founders are on the right track with this live event setup. They also picked a vibrant sector, with blockchain gaming. We’ll be back later this week with updates about the Devcon 7 conference. This takes place during the remained of the week, also in Bangkok.
