The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission may be at the precipice of something big. Commissioner Hester Peirce, often referred to as “Crypto Mom” for her advocacy of digital assets, took to social media to express her glee over Paul Atkins’ return to the agency.

Peirce emphasized “a lot of work to do” at the SEC to advance free markets, encourage innovation, and improve investor choice.

This happens as the SEC receives more criticisms over its handling of cryptocurrencies and market fairness under the soon-outgoing Chair Gary Gensler. Gensler, whose tenure has been contentious because of his aggressive actions in enforcing actions against crypto firms, has left some arguing that the agency seems hostile to innovation but willing to regulate it.

The official announced he is resigning effective January 2025, meaning that Atkins, a Trump appointee, will now assume the seat.

Paul Atkins is a former commissioner of the SEC, from 2002-2008, and the current CEO of Patomak Global Partners, highly regarded for his pro-market position and expertise in risk management for fintech and cryptocurrency platforms.

His return is widely welcomed by the cryptocurrency community as they hope that he may act as a catalyst to gain more clarity regarding regulations and approval of innovative financial products, like cryptocurrency ETFs.

The crypto community, however, remains skeptical about the SEC’s ability to address longstanding grievances. For instance, critics have pointed out the unresolved issues surrounding the trading halt of $MMTLP, accusing the SEC of failing to protect investors and ensure market transparency.

With Peirce’s newly revised view of her post as one of optimism for emerging regulation that balances innovation with investor trust, the SEC is ready for new leadership. It might just have begun a bright future for the crypto world.
