Apple’s iPhone lineup has seen a remarkable evolution since its debut in 2007, with each new release pushing the boundaries of technology and design. Over the years, Apple has introduced various updated features, from the Retina display to Face ID.

In anticipation of the iPhone 16 series launch, Apple’s previous releases have always been highly anticipated, often setting industry trends. The iPhone 14 and 15 series continued this tradition by enhancing camera systems and performance and introducing features like the Dynamic Island and the A16 chip.

The iPhone 15 series also introduced features like the 48-megapixel main camera for non-Pro models. The event was highlighted by Apple’s transition to USB-C, making it one of the most significant updates in recent years.

What to know about the iPhone 16 series

This year is no different. The iPhone 16 series is expected to build on Apple’s legacy with several exciting updates. Although the tech giant has yet to make any official announcement concerning its launch date, it has been rumoured that the event will take place on September 10, 2024, with reports suggesting that the iPhone 16 series will be on the shelves of retail shops on September 20.

During WWDC 2024, which took place in June, it was speculated that the iPhone 16 series would be the first Apple smartphone to get a pre-installed iOS 18 upgrade. And the Pro models will feature Apple Intelligence a little later, in October.

The rumour is that the iPhone series will bring 4 new models to the market: the standard variant, the 16 Plus, the 16 Pro, and the 16 Pro Max.

Here is everything else that you should know:

A18 and Apple Intelligence

The new lineup is rumoured to include an A18 chip, significantly enhancing the AI capabilities of the devices. Apple’s new A18 chip is built on the advanced N3E 3-nanometre node, promising improvements in efficiency and performance.

The Pro models might offer different versions of this chip, possibly labelled A18 and A18 Pro, to differentiate between the standard and Pro models.

The biggest upgrade in processing power for the iPhone 16 series is expected to come from the Neural Engine, which will likely have more cores. This will enhance the phone’s AI and machine learning capabilities, making it more powerful.

With this upgrade, users will be able to do things like create images instantly using the Image Playground, get transcripts of phone calls and voice notes, and even get help with writing tasks, as seen with the new Apple Intelligence features in iOS 18.

iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max screen sizes

The iPhone 16 Pro will be 6.3 inches, and the iPhone 16 Pro Max will be 6.9 inches, a significant increase from the iPhone 15 models. These are the first size upgrades in years, while the standard iPhone 16 models will remain the same size as their iPhone 15 counterparts.

With the increase in display size, the dimensions of the iPhone’s body will also increase. Both models are expected to be taller and wider than the iPhone 15 Pro models, and while the thickness will remain the same, the weight will increase slightly due to the larger size. The general shape and design will not be updated, but the bezels will be slimmer.

iPhone 16 Pro colours

Apple is reportedly ditching the blue titanium model for a new desert titanium colour. Think bronze or dark gold, which looks just okay in leaked photos. Desert Titanium would join the returning black, grey, and white options.

New iPhone design and camera upgrades

Design-wise, the iPhone 16 may feature a redesigned camera layout, moving back to a vertical alignment similar to the iPhone 12, which could support new spatial video recording capabilities.

This change is expected to enhance the phone’s capability to capture spatial video, making it more compatible with Apple’s Vision Pro headset.

Both the iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max are tipped to feature a 48MP ultra-wide camera, up from 12MP on the iPhone 15 series. That means you should expect sharper, ultra-wide shots, and also more flexibility when it comes to cropping. The new sensor should also let in more light for brighter pictures, especially in low-light situations.

More importantly, we’re going to see zoom parity on both the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max. They’re expected to get the same tetra prism zoom lens. So we’re talking 5x optical zoom and 25x digital zoom at least, which would be a pretty significant upgrade.

The new capture button

The biggest design change expected for the iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max is the addition of a new capture button. This button is designed to function like a real camera shutter, allowing users to press halfway to engage auto-focus and fully press to take a photo.

The new capture buutton

This frees up the Action Button for other functions or shortcuts. Additionally, swiping over the capture button will let you zoom in and out while shooting photos and videos. While it’s likely this button will be exclusive to the Pro models, there are rumours it could also be included on the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus.

Other anticipated upgrades include a smaller camera bump and a new stacked battery design for improved battery life.

iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max prices

The iPhone 16 Pro may see a price increase from $999 to $1,099, but with an upgrade in base storage from 128GB to 256GB, matching the iPhone 15 Pro Max. The iPhone 16 Pro Max is expected to keep its starting price at $1,199, which would be competitive since the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra starts at $1,299.

The iPhone 16 is expected to retain the USB-C port introduced in the iPhone 15 series, with further enhancements to charging and battery technology.

Apple is tipped to use stacked battery technology on the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max for the first time, which would likely allow for more capacity. As a result, the iPhone 16 Pro could have a 3355 mAh battery, and the iPhone 16 Pro Max could pack four 4676 mAh batteries, according to leaked specs.

Meanwhile, the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max are both rumoured to get 40W wired charging and 20W MagSafe charging.
