Seattle-based Luxor Technology Corporation announced on Tuesday that it secured $16 million in a strategic investment round led by CMT Digital, the venture capital division of CMT Group. This round included participation from companies such as Canaan, MicroBT, Halo, Steelhead, as well as several angel investors.
Strategic funding, partners, and expansion plans
The investment involved both primary and secondary capital. Luxor described each investor as an active operating partner across the hardware, capital, and power segments of the compute supply chain it serves. The company reported that its hardware brokerage desk has handled $1 billion worth of ASIC hardware trades for Bitcoin mining to date. In its energy division, Luxor is currently managing over 75 megawatts of electrical load across major US grids ERCOT and SPP.
Since September, Luxor’s agentic cloud platform reportedly completed 1.8 million workloads year to date. The recent capital infusion will support several key initiatives: scaling the agentic cloud platform, increasing working capital for the AI hardware segment, expanding compute derivative trading and market-making, and hiring additional engineering and go-to-market personnel.
The company emphasized a further push into hardware, responding to increasingly constrained supply chains. Luxor’s AI hardware desk sources GPUs and AI servers through a network of partners. As a Value-Added Reseller to major original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), Luxor said it has access to abandoned orders, special allocations, and secondary markets for hardware.
Mini dictionary: ERCOT and SPP — The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) manages the electric grid and power markets for most of Texas. The Southwest Power Pool (SPP) oversees the regional transmission of electricity in parts of the central United States.
AI and compute markets integration
Luxor entered the AI sector in September by launching Luxor AI, which extends its established Bitcoin mining infrastructure to artificial intelligence and high-performance computing. Luxor’s over-the-counter desk now provides cash-settled options, forwards, and backstops on compute-rental indexes. As AI compute is increasingly traded as a commodity, the firm aims to become a key player in this emerging market.
CMT Digital, which led the latest investment round, brings extensive experience in electronic trading and market structure. Sam Hallene, partner at CMT Digital, stated that Luxor has built deep expertise in energy and infrastructure, as well as financial tools essential for clients to manage risk in digital assets—a skillset developed over eight years and now applied to AI. Hallene described this expertise as positioning Luxor to accelerate the growth of compute markets for AI.
Sam Hallene of CMT Digital noted that Luxor understands the complex energy and infrastructure needs for compute and is equipping clients with the risk management tools necessary for digital and AI markets.
Canaan, a technology company known for designing and producing blockchain servers and ASIC microprocessors, also joined the investment. CEO Nangeng Zhang indicated that Canaan is pursuing long-term power resources in North America and said participating in Luxor’s cap table aligns with their strategy of integrating compute with energy resources. He highlighted Luxor as a key partner in both mining and energy sectors.
Nick Hansen, co-founder and CEO of Luxor, remarked that compute markets are converging, with the same miners, infrastructure, and capital now supporting both digital asset mining and AI advancement. Earlier this year, the company introduced Commander, a dedicated platform for Bitcoin mining fleet management, enabling operators to monitor real-time operations, manage energy use, and navigate hashrate or electricity price fluctuations from a single interface.
Integrating seamlessly with existing mining infrastructure, Commander offers real-time fleet oversight, remote controls, and tools to optimize profitability amid shifting market and energy conditions. Public Bitcoin miners reportedly signed over $70 billion in AI and high-performance computing contracts by the end of March, according to data from digital asset investment firm CoinShares.
Nick Hansen observed that compute markets are evolving to serve both digital mining and the rapidly growing AI sector, leveraging shared resources and capital.
