Dutch authorities have detained two individuals accused of using counterfeit EURC tokens to purchase genuine Rolex watches. The investigation commenced when luxury watch sellers, believing they had received legitimate cryptocurrency payments, handed over their products.
Did Sellers Mistake Fraud for Real Payments?
Yes, officials reported that the suspects contacted sellers through one of the Netherlands’ major online marketplaces, Marktplaats. The parties allegedly agreed on payment with EURC for the luxury timepieces. Initially, the crypto assets transferred by the buyers appeared authentic but were later discovered to be fake tokens.
Police emphasized the difficulty of distinguishing the counterfeit crypto assets from real EURC.
What Differentiates Genuine EURC from Counterfeit Tokens?
The real EURC is recognized as a euro-pegged stablecoin. Within the cryptocurrency ecosystem, certain unauthorized tokens mimic the names and symbols of well-known assets. This creates additional risks for both buyers and sellers, particularly during direct wallet transactions.
A brief glossary: EURC, a type of stablecoin, aims to keep its value anchored to the euro. Stablecoins are designed to maintain their price relative to a specific fiat currency or other reference points.
Authorities did not disclose how the fake tokens were created. However, the method employed in this incident was convincing enough to replicate legitimate blockchain assets.
Investigation Continues on Two Detainees
Police announced the arrest of two men, aged 24 and 45, on September 9. The older suspect was released later, yet the inquiry concerning him persists.
The investigation is still active.
Authorities are verifying possible connections of the detainees to other crypto fraud cases.
The public is advised to utilize only familiar and trusted payment methods.
Dutch officials have highlighted the importance of scrutinizing the contract and asset verification just as much as the token name, especially in high-value transactions.
