Tom Lee, the chief investment officer at Fundstrat, has commented on the recent price correction in the U.S. stock market, asserting that the upward trend remains intact. He noted that the S&P 500 index has reached low levels but expressed optimism about the market’s potential for recovery, indicating its openness to various scenarios.

Market Predictions

Lee highlighted that the market could either experience a sudden and robust recovery akin to 2020 or undergo consolidation processes similar to 2011. He pointed out that investors’ expectations and risk perceptions will be pivotal in steering market direction.

The current period is distinctly different from previous ones, with uncertainty surrounding the extent of economic challenges stemming from the trade war initiated by Trump.

Comments on U.S. Markets

Lee expressed concerns regarding new risk factors emerging from issues like tariffs and inflation expectations in the market.

Tom Lee: “I believe we are still in a bull market. I am just not sure if this will be a V-shaped recovery like in 2020 or a range-bound market like in 2011.”

He also reflected on the potential triggers of current risks perceived by investors, citing tensions with China, financial risks, and rising inflation expectations as significant concerns.

Tom Lee: “Intuitively, I would say it makes sense that we have made a bottom, but we may remain range-bound. This is due to people’s concerns about other potential issues ahead. The tariff war with China could escalate into a cold war. Investors will worry about the ripple effects of this shock leading to a global recession…”

Discussing technical analysis, Lee noted that only 6% of stocks in the S&P 500 are above their 50-day moving average, while 19% are above their 200-day moving average.

According to assessments, the market may have reached a structural bottom in its current state. However, continued volatility is expected in the upcoming periods.

Investors are urged to consider risk factors seriously, emphasizing cautious steps in portfolio management strategies. It is believed that potential fluctuations in the market will influence long-term investment plans.
