The blockchain industry has a habit of leading with big numbers. Projects routinely advertise theoretical transaction-per-second figures that look impressive in whitepapers but rarely show up on live networks. When you strip out the marketing and look at what chains are actually doing in real time, the picture narrows considerably.

According to data from @chainspect_app, a blockchain analytics platform that tracks live performance across more than 50 networks, only two chains have consistently topped the real-world speed rankings: @Solana and @Dfinity's Internet Computer.

The numbers that matter

$SOL recorded an average of 1,990 transactions per second over the past week, with $ICP close behind at 1,458 tx/s. No other network came close. For context, Chainspect's live dashboard shows BNB Chain ranked third at roughly 184 tx/s, with Ethereum sitting at around 17 tx/s. The gap between the top two and the rest of the field is not marginal. It is substantial.

Chainspect tracks real-time TPS, block time, finality, and more than 40 other metrics across 50-plus blockchain networks, processing over 2TB of data daily. That makes it one of the more reliable sources for cutting through claimed figures and looking at on-chain reality.

Theoretical vs. real-world performance

The distinction between theoretical and real-world TPS matters. Solana's 65,000 TPS figure comes from its Proof of History architecture and represents the network's design ceiling under ideal conditions. In practice, real throughput is a fraction of that, which is normal for any blockchain, since actual TPS depends on live demand rather than capacity.

Solana has the fastest real-world transaction speed of any major blockchain, running at 2,000 to 4,000 TPS in practice. Meanwhile, ICP's architecture uses a subnet-based model with a recorded peak TPS ceiling of around 11,500 and instant finality on many transaction types. Both networks are operating in a different category from most of their competitors when it comes to live, sustained throughput.

The data reinforces a broader point: headline TPS claims are a starting point for evaluation, not a conclusion. What networks do under real demand is what ultimately matters for developers, users, and anyone building applications that need to scale.
