Zcash is preparing to implement its anticipated network upgrade, NU7, targeting activation at block height 3,543,405, expected around November 5. The update will significantly reduce target block intervals from 75 seconds to 25 seconds, aiming to speed up transaction confirmations and introduce several technical changes that impact confirmation timing, transaction fee allocation, and transaction validity.

Major changes under NU7

The NU7 upgrade—backed by the Zcash Foundation, a non-profit organization promoting the privacy-focused cryptocurrency—will not alter daily ZEC issuance, as rewards will be split among more blocks. The network’s supply cap and the four-year halving schedule will remain constant, maintaining Zcash’s fixed maximum of 21 million ZEC tokens.

Node operators are required to upgrade their software to Zebra 7.0.0 or equivalent versions to stay in sync with the network’s updated consensus. With the implementation of ZIP 218, the target time for block confirmations will be reduced to 25 seconds. This change is set to shorten the typical interval for initial confirmations from almost four minutes to about 75 seconds for three confirmations, though network conditions may still cause variations.

A coinholder vote held in September reflected broad support: nearly 2.4 million ZEC participated, with 99.9% favoring the 25-second block interval and 98.9% backing the current halving cycle.

Polling in September saw almost two-thirds of eligible ZEC holders take part, endorsing faster blocks and the current halving schedule by overwhelming margins.

Transaction changes and user implications

NU7 will also introduce restrictions on shielded transaction activity, with stated goals including enhanced network efficiency and wallet spam mitigation. Under ZIP 235, 60% of transaction fees will be sequestered in a reserve, eventually returning as block rewards at height 8,939,664.

The NU7 deployment proposal notes that version 4 transactions will become invalid with the upgrade. Funds still residing in the original Sprout pool, which was Zcash’s initial privacy pool, will become unspendable. Transactions using version 5 and version 6 will retain validity. NU7 does not add a new transaction version itself.

Mini dictionary: Sprout pool, Zcash’s initial privacy transaction pool allowing shielded transactions, is being deprecated for enhanced security; funds left in this pool after major protocol upgrades may become inaccessible.

Governance and funding debate

Ongoing discussions within the Zcash community have accompanied the upgrade. Co-founder Sean Bowe has proposed ending the ongoing allocation of 8% of newly created ZEC to the Zcash Community Grants program, arguing the committee already controls around $125 million after fulfilled obligations. The suggested shift would redirect this allocation toward a reserve for future mining rewards, while existing committee funds and responsibilities would remain unaffected.

This proposal has generated debate, partly due to grievances over grant spending, including one project aimed at privacy payment outreach in industries with restricted financial access. Some community members have supported the grants’ outreach objectives, while others question the appropriateness of these expenditures.

Community scrutiny intensified following a grant supporting privacy-payment outreach in sectors facing financial barriers; advocates argue such programs introduce essential privacy technologies to overlooked populations.

In addition, the Zcash ecosystem has recently seen organizational changes. A draft Zcash Improvement Proposal (ZIP) indicates that Electric Coin Company’s (ECC) engineering and product team left in January 2026 after disagreements with nonprofit controller Bootstrap. The two parties reached a resolution in February, with Bootstrap approving the transfer of the Zashi wallet and related technology, and confirming ECC’s planned dissolution as staff moved to a newly formed entity, Zcash Open Development Lab.

Mini dictionary: Electric Coin Company (ECC) was the main developer behind Zcash, responsible for much of the protocol’s original engineering before structural changes transferred leadership and technical assets to new entities.

Following these events, Zcash Open Development Lab, composed of former ECC members, announced more than $25 million in seed funding from investors such as Paradigm, a16z crypto, Winklevoss Capital, and Coinbase Ventures.

Market context and technical outlook

ZEC’s price showed weakness leading up to the upgrade, though no direct market impact from the NU7 news has been observed. As of November 3, CoinGecko recorded Bitcoin at $76,981 (down 1.25%) and Ether at $2,263.77 (down 1.20%) over 24 hours. The Crypto Fear & Greed Index, which provides a general sentiment reading for major cryptocurrencies, stood at 26 (Fear).

Activation of NU7 remains scheduled for November 5, but its effects on user behavior, market activity, and technical adoption can only be measured once live.

Monitoring future developments

The immediate user risk centers on Sprout pool funds, which will become inaccessible once version 4 transactions are invalidated. Node operators face the requirement to update software to maintain connectivity on the consensus chain. The governance and funding changes are separate from the upgrade’s technical rollout, and their long-term effects on Zcash’s ecosystem will continue to be debated.

Users and observers are advised to confirm the upgrade’s activation, monitor for network stability, and watch for any additional guidance from the Zcash Foundation or development teams regarding transaction handling and funding changes.
