Aptos Brings Encrypted Transactions to Mainnet

@Aptos has activated Confidential APT on its mainnet, marking a significant step in on-chain financial privacy. The feature, which cleared Governance Proposal 188 with 100% of votes in favour across over 302 million $APT staked, allows users to shield sensitive transaction data without abandoning the transparency that regulators and institutions require.

Confidential APT gives users the option to encrypt token balances and transaction amounts while keeping sender and receiver identity visible on-chain. The feature is entirely opt-in — those who prefer full transparency can continue operating as they do today.

Under the hood, the feature relies on zero-knowledge proofs and Twisted ElGamal encryption to process balance updates on-chain without validators ever seeing the underlying figures. Crucially, wallet addresses remain publicly visible, placing Confidential APT in a distinct category from fully opaque coins like Monero.

For situations requiring regulatory oversight, Aptos has implemented an "auditor key" system — these keys can only be activated through an on-chain governance vote, granting authorised parties access to specific transaction data when legally mandated. This design means compliance obligations can still be met without compromising default user privacy.

Institutional Use Cases Drive the Push for Privacy

Aptos Labs founding engineer Sherry Xiao has been direct about the real-world motivation behind the launch. Xiao highlighted that Confidential APT addresses a major operational challenge for businesses considering blockchain adoption — transparent on-chain payroll systems expose employee salaries to competitors and the public, while treasury management, settlement flows, and trading strategies are similarly vulnerable.

While enterprises may take longer to integrate the privacy token due to compliance and tax reporting complexities, individual users are expected to adopt Confidential APT more rapidly. Xiao noted that six months of stable mainnet performance with meaningful transaction volume would be the evidence institutions need to shorten their internal approval processes.

The launch comes as the broader $APT ecosystem continues to build momentum. According to data from @TokenRelations, the $APT ecosystem now hosts a $1.71B stablecoin market cap, with 45.4K $APT burned this week amid intensifying network demand. Meanwhile, @DecibelTrade processed a record 49.8M weekly transactions across the high-throughput Layer 1, underscoring how high-velocity trading remains a key growth engine for the network.

The mainnet launch follows several months of structural developments positioning Aptos for institutional engagement, including Bitnomial listing the first US-regulated APT futures contracts in January under CFTC oversight.A joint SEC/CFTC ruling in March formally classified APT as a digital commodity, clearing a significant regulatory overhang for funds and ETF applicants.
