Bitcoin Whale Resurfaces With $41M Transfer After 12 Years

A Bitcoin wallet that had not registered any activity since November 2013 transferred its entire holdings on Sunday, moving 500 $BTC worth roughly $41 million to a new address. The transaction was flagged by onchain analytics platform Arkham and independently confirmed by blockchain tracker Whale Alert.

The wallet, which had not been used for 12.5 years, made the transfer on May 10. The coins were moved from address "1KAA8GGhVjjUjVTz1HKAjCyGNzAKQd882j" to a new address, with the wallet having remained inactive since November 2013.

The original holder acquired 500 $BTC for roughly $457,000. At prices near $81,500, the position is worth around $40.6 million, an estimated 88x return.

No Signs of a Sale, But Analysts Are Watching

The transfer destination does not appear to be associated with any known exchange, leaving the motive for the move unclear. Large holders often move coins between wallets for address management or security purposes, though such activity can also precede sales or transfers to exchanges. In this case, the destination address does not appear to be linked to a known exchange wallet.

The event is also part of a broader pattern. On May 10, between blocks 948,694 and 948,822, wallets created between 2013 and 2017 transferred 859.13 $BTC, equivalent to roughly $69.47 million in total. Dormant Bitcoin wallets have increasingly resurfaced since $BTC first crossed the $100,000 mark in late 2024, with several early investors and miners moving long-held coins over the past year.

Holders may move coins due to price appreciation, estate events, cold storage consolidation, or preparation for a sale, and onchain data alone cannot confirm which. Until the $BTC moves to a known exchange deposit address, the transaction remains ambiguous.
