The dollar is no longer just contested, but it is now bypassed in real usage. Starting April 30, 2026, the BRICS take a decisive step with the deployment of an operational payment system between China and Indonesia. Behind this initiative is a clear ambition: to concretely reduce dependence on the greenback in daily transactions. This progress marks the transition from a political strategy to a tangible application, likely to reshuffle the cards of the international monetary system.

In Brief

  • The BRICS reach a new milestone by turning dedollarization into a concrete and operational initiative.
  • A dollar-free payment system between China and Indonesia will be officially launched on April 30, 2026.
  • This mechanism relies on QR code payment technology allowing simple and direct transactions.
  • Initial tests have already shown significant results with more than 1.64 million transactions recorded.

China–Indonesia: a Cross-border Dollar-free Payment System

The BRICS dedollarization project takes on a concrete dimension with the announcement of a payment system based on the QRIS standard (Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard), designed to facilitate transactions between China and Indonesia.

The official start date is scheduled for April 30, following a preparation phase considered complete by the authorities. Filianingsih Hendarta, Vice Governor of Bank Indonesia, stated : “technically and commercially, all aspects are now ready to be implemented” before adding : “we hope to officially launch it on April 30, 2026”. This mechanism aims to allow direct payments via QR code, without resorting to the US dollar.

Several key elements structure this initiative :

  • The establishment of an interoperable payment system based on QRIS ;
  • The goal is to ease transactions between Chinese and Indonesian users ;
  • A test phase recorded 1.64 million transactions ;
  • The total transaction volume estimated at 556 billion rupiah (~32 million dollars) ;
  • Adoption supported by an increasing number of users and merchants.

This mechanism primarily targets travelers and economic actors operating between the two countries, simplifying cross-border payments. Perry Warjiyo, Governor of Bank Indonesia, highlighted this dynamic by emphasizing the ongoing growth of the QRIS ecosystem, driven by widespread adoption among users and merchants.

A Strategic Acceleration of the BRICS Agenda

Beyond the bilateral case between China and Indonesia, this initiative is part of a dynamic driven by the BRICS to reduce the influence of the dollar in international trade. Using a payment system based on interoperable QR codes marks a shift towards technological solutions adapted to emerging economies, capable of functioning outside dominant financial infrastructures. This approach builds on usage already widespread in mobile payments in Asia, while giving it a cross-border dimension.

This advancement also illustrates a change in method. Where discussions on dedollarization often remained theoretical or institutional, this project proposes a concrete and immediately usable application.

It is no longer just about diversifying foreign exchange reserves or promoting local currencies in trade, but about creating operational tools for end users. This shift towards pragmatic solutions could accelerate the adoption of alternatives to the dollar in other regions and among other BRICS members.

In the long run, this type of initiative could gradually reshape international financial flows. If adoption is confirmed and expanded to other economic corridors, despite the bloc’s strategic shift, the dollar’s role in daily payments could be questioned, without disappearing in the short term. Evolution will depend on these systems’ ability to gain users’ trust, integrate into existing networks, and offer stability comparable to current infrastructures.
