On Monday, April 20, 2026, the Paris prosecutor’s office was expecting the owner of the social network X as part of a criminal investigation into abuses on his platform. Summoned since February, billionaire Elon Musk chose absence and provocation.

In brief

  • Elon Musk did not show up to his summons before the Paris prosecutor’s office on April 20, 2026.
  • The investigation concerns AI deepfakes, child pornography images, and fraudulent data extraction via X.
  • Washington supports Musk: the DOJ would have refused any legal assistance to France.
  • The case directly impacts DOGE, Tesla, and crypto assets linked to Musk’s empire.
  • The procedure continues despite the billionaire’s absence.

Elon Musk summoned in Paris: deepfakes, AI and illicit images at the heart of the case

Opened in January 2025 by the national cyber unit of the gendarmerie, the investigation targets three major offenses:

  • First: complicity in the distribution of child pornography images
  • Second: the creation of sexual deepfakes via Grok, the generative artificial intelligence integrated into X (ultra-realistic edits produced without the consent of the victims)
  • Third: large-scale fraudulent data extraction.

The Paris prosecutor, Laure Beccuau, had however shown a desire to appease. She described a “constructive” approach aimed at ensuring the compliance of the X platform with French laws. Elon Musk, however, did not respond to this outstretched hand. His summons for a voluntary and non-binding hearing went unanswered.

Good to know: the former CEO of X, Linda Yaccarino, is also targeted by the procedure as the “legal manager” of the platform at the time of the facts.

Elon Musk facing France: a France-US diplomatic crisis

The case goes beyond a simple legal dispute. According to the Wall Street Journal, the US Department of Justice (DOJ) allegedly refused all legal assistance to France. It considers that the Paris investigation violates the American First Amendment on freedom of speech. In response, the Paris prosecutor’s office says it is unaware of this letter. In any case, the diplomatic pressure is real.

On his side, Elon Musk calls it a political attack. On his network, he endorses Washington’s position with a terse statement:

Paris does not capitulate. The prosecutor’s office has transmitted procedural documents to the California Attorney General, to the New York prosecutor as well as to several European prosecutors. International coordination is accelerating.

Elon Musk absent: what consequences for DOGE and cryptos?

Every controversy directly involving Elon Musk generally generates volatility on his associated assets. Dogecoin (DOGE) is the most documented example: the billionaire’s negative media appearances regularly trigger price corrections within 24 to 48 hours. Tesla and private markets related to SpaceX also experience similar pressures.

More structurally, a French conviction (even partial) could force X to review its model in Europe under the requirements of the DSA (Digital Services Act), notably regarding content moderation. A removal or restriction of access to the platform on French territory would also weaken the valuation of Elon Musk’s entire empire.

One thing is certain: the investigation is progressing. Elon Musk’s absence does not suspend the procedure in any way. It is part of a broader power struggle over European digital sovereignty against American tech giants. For crypto investors, a case to watch closely.
