MUSK
Elon Musk has chosen public confrontation with the French justice system. Targeted by an investigation over X and its artificial intelligence Grok, the American billionaire published insults in French directly aimed at the magistrates in charge of the case. Behind this new provocation lies a much bigger conflict between European authorities and digital platforms accused of algorithmic drifts, dissemination of illicit content, and political interference. Paris is now taking on one of the most powerful men in global tech.
While the French investigation targeting X causes tensions between Paris and Washington, the tension escalated after several messages published by Elon Musk on X directly targeting French judges. The American billionaire shared a TV5Monde video accompanied by a mocking comment inspired by the film “Monty Python and the Holy Grail.”
He writes : “they are faker than a chocolate euro and more extravagant than a flamingo in a neon tutu!”, before adding : “go away or I will mock you a second time!”. These remarks come as the Paris prosecutor’s office seeks to question Elon Musk in an investigation concerning X, xAI Holdings Corp, and the former platform leader Linda Yaccarino.
French authorities blame the platform for several elements :
The US Department of Justice reportedly refused to cooperate with France citing protections offered by the First Amendment of the US Constitution. However, the Paris prosecutor’s office reiterates that “this procedure aims to enforce the law and protect people”. Investigators are even considering coercive measures in case of refusal to cooperate. This escalation marks a new chapter in the already tense relations between Elon Musk and several Western governments.
Beyond Elon Musk’s verbal attacks, the French investigation targets much more sensitive elements related to the very functioning of X and its artificial intelligence Grok. The magistrates are particularly interested in the dissemination of antisemitic content, sexual images involving minors, and the circulation of child exploitation content on the platform. Additionally, investigators also blame X for a massive drop in reports related to child exploitation in France. The AI Grok is also suspected of generating some of the problematic content.
French authorities are now seeking to determine if X’s algorithms may have facilitated certain political influence operations or targeted ideological campaigns. These suspicions notably focus on algorithmic manipulations likely to have amplified certain political content in Europe. Elon Musk’s overt support for European parties such as the German AfD has increased questions around the platform’s political role. In this case, French magistrates seem to want to set a legal precedent about algorithmic responsibility and the power of AI-powered platforms.
This case could heavily impact future relations between European governments and major American tech companies. Until now, Elon Musk has often turned regulatory confrontations into media displays of strength. France now seems ready to move the conflict to the criminal field. Behind the X case lies the whole question of regulating generative AIs, European digital sovereignty, and social media responsibility under the spotlight.
