@injective announced a strategic partnership with South Korean music ownership platform Musicow on Thursday, with the two firms joining forces to bring music intellectual property (IP) rights onchain for fans and investors worldwide.
Despite institutional capital aggressively acquiring music catalogs, the asset class has remained almost entirely absent from blockchain-based real-world asset (RWA) markets. That is the gap this deal aims to close. Injective will handle RWA token issuance, on-chain distribution, secondary-market trading, and royalty settlement as it seeks to expand access for global investors. The layer-1 blockchain describes itself as institution-focused, supporting KYC and AML compliance, and has recorded $6.5 billion in cumulative RWA trading volume and more than $77 billion in total on-chain volume.
Eric Chen, co-founder of Injective, said the partnership with Musicow US has created a structure the music industry has long awaited, and that Injective aims to be the first platform to enable compliance-based music copyrights to be held, transferred onchain, and used in decentralized finance (DeFi).
Founded in 2016, Musicow introduced the world's first fractional investment platform for music copyright trading. As of September 2024, the company's cumulative membership stood at 1.2 million, with total transactions reaching KRW 420 billion ($293 million).Musicow has so far secured about 20,000 music IPs. The model is straightforward: the platform splits copyright claim rights into small fractions and puts them up for auction, with investors earning profits from music copyrights much like dividends from shares.
Earlier this year, the Korean startup joined hands with Roc Nation, the entertainment company founded by Jay-Z, to offer securitized fractional music royalties in the US market.Musicow's US operation filed its securities with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and received approval for issuance under the SEC's Regulation A+ framework.
Musicow chair Jung Hyun-kyung said the company plans to actively adopt RWA and tokenization technology, building on its experience in security token offerings (STOs), to connect K-content copyrights to the Web3 ecosystem. Catalog drops featuring globally recognized artists are expected in the coming months.
WIPO research analyzing data from platforms including Musicow shows that music IP assets remain largely insulated from stock market fluctuations, offering portfolio diversification with stable returns. That profile, combined with growing institutional interest in music catalogs, makes the Injective-Musicow deal a notable step toward bringing the asset class within reach of a broader, global investor base.
